Noteworthy Photographers

Ansel Adams was an American photographer who photographed beautiful western landscapes in black and white, especially in Yosemite National Park. His work has been printed on calendars, posters, books and postcards. He passed away in 1984 at the age of 82.

Mario Testino is a Peruvian fashion and portrait photographer, recognised for his work with Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ. He mainly photographs A-list stars, musicians and supermodels as well as subjects he has encountered throughout his travels. Eighteen exhibitions and more than 16 books have been published on his work.

Don McCullin is a British photographer who was recognised for his war photography and was knighted in 1993 because of the Queen’s ‘massive respect’ for him. His career started up in 1959 and he specialised in focusing on the downtrodden and impoverished. His mission was the get people to be less ignorant and see the poverty around them.

David Bailey is an 84 year old, former fashion and portrait photographer and he shot 800 pages of Vogue editorial in just one year. Along with Terrence Donovan and Brian Duffy, Bailey captured and helped create the ‘Swinging London’ scene of the 60’s; a culture of fashion and celebrity chic. Bailey specialised with musicians and actors.

Gregory Crewdson takes cinematic, dramatic photographs that are staged in small-town America. They are usually disturbing and surreal to unnerve people. He uses techniques of lighting often used to make movies. Crewdson is represented by Gagosian Gallery.

Annie Leibovitz its a very famously celebrated American photographer best known for her stunning portrait pieces of celebrities. The uniqueness of Leibovitz’s work is how she manages to capture personality and reflects intimate moments in her work.

Born on October 2nd 1949, in Connecticut USA, the artist studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute with the intention of becoming an art teacher. In 1970, she started work as a commercial photographer for The Rolling Stones magazine, and soon became the first women to be named ‘Chief Photographer’. She soon left this publication and began working at Vanity Fair, where she developed her style of stage and brightly lit portraits.

As for her other works, she was hired by the Walt Disney company company to do a series of photograph with celebrities in various roles and scenes for the Disney parks ‘Year of a Million Dreams’ campaign.

She famously captured the last image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono 5 hours before his death in 1980. This is a very symbolic and important photograph for those who were a fan a Lennon.
